18.4.7 Food Labelling

WHEREAS we currently accept food with insufficient information on the label eg. “distributed by” does not tell us where the food or the ingredients originated or whether the food is genetically modified, and

WHEREAS we as consumers need to know where all the ingredients originated and whether any are genetically modified so that we can determine if we feel comfortable with a company’s food preparations, origins of ingredients and inspection according to Canadian standards, and

WHEREAS presently 64 Countries worldwide require mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the National Pensioners call upon the Minister of Health Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency Canada that “distributed by” is not acceptable and that labeling of genetically modified ingredients be mandatory.
