“Response from the Fed. Min. of Health to BC FORUM’s letter re: National Pharmacare Plan”

Diane Wood is the President of the BC Federation of Retired Union Members

Dear Ms. Wood,

Thank you for your letter dated January 9, 2018, addressed to the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health, expressing the support of the B.C. Federation of Retired Union Members (BC FORUM) for a national pharmacare plan. This response is sent on her behalf. We appreciate you taking the time to share the view of the BC FORUM with us. We regret the delay in the response.

As you may know, the Government of Canada announced the creation of an Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare to be headed by Dr. Eric Hoskins as part of Budget 2018. The Council will report to the federal Ministers of Health and Finance, and will provide independent advice to the government on how best to implement national pharmacare in a manner that is affordable for Canadians and their families, employers and governments. The Council will consult with a broad range of stakeholders and with Canadians, and is expected to deliver its advice to the government in the spring of 2019. The report of the Parliamentary Budget Officer and the recent report of the Standing Committee on Health on national pharmacare will receive careful consideration by the Council as it embarks on a national dialogue with Canadians on this important issue. More detailed information on the Council will be published as soon as it is available.

While the work of the Council proceeds, we will continue to work with provincial and territorial governments and other key partners to improve the affordability and accessibility of needed prescription drugs. Again, thank you for writing and sharing your organization’s perspective on this important issue.

Yours sincerely,
